Throughout the world, women were barred from serving in military because of great physical qualities. The women structure is quite different than men. They cannot lift weights as can be done by the same age and weight group in men. Women got equal rights and opportunities in other public areas. However, they were denied opportunity in military. The military law limiting women’s entry into military was abolished in 1992. Most of the positions in combat and ships were opened to women since 1993.
A new institution-wide policy was framed in 1994 which excluded women from combat positions and they were limited to service and support wings only. The doors for automatic inclusion were opened with US Secretary of Defense, Leon Panetta’s declaration in January, 2013. There was an exception to services and Special Operations. They were given three more years to study the repercussions in inducting women in those forces. An exception can be raised if women cannot be allowed to such kinds of positions. The exclusion will not be done very easily. Rigorous analysis of data and skill and abilities will be done so that the decision will be taken without any bias.
The organizational change should be managed in a very efficient manner. As per new changes, the inclusion into closed positions is being done on a sense of urgency. Even though some units and positions were closed in the past, they will be reopened after completing detailed evaluation. A guiding coalition will be provided. The expertise, power and credibility will be utilized to deliver best possible opportunities for women so that they will be inducted into military as per their capabilities. Best vision and strategy will be implemented to safeguard the interests of women. Some guiding principles were provided to military services and there are some deadlines as well by which policy changes should be implemented.
The barriers are being removed by empowering employees for broad based action. The power and resources are provided to employees so that there will be structural change without any difficulty. When there is change process, there will be disruption in internal behaviors. Organizational cultures will evolve and identities will be reconstructed in this process. The change methods should be implemented very quickly by military so that the difference will be ironed out at the earliest. At last, the military should open all ground combat positions to women as well and there will be certain relaxation during the selection process. The relaxation will be done as per the physical limits of women’s body compared to the male body.
There are series of approaches to accomplish change behavior. As per the restructured and post-modern soldier identity, the inclusion of women is done in the best possible way. Thus, there are drastic changes from the earliest 18th century Revolutionary War to the latest 2008 war in Iraq and Afghanistan. Women had shown great improvement in their performance and they continue to take up crucial job positions so that the differences will be zero in the coming days.
